August Update

It’s peak season here at Re-Member! We love to see the program running at its full operational capacity. Every day, we are sending dozens of volunteers out into the community. Some folks are digging an outhouse; others are skirting a trailer, building a ramp, or working in our gardens. Beds and outhouses are being constructed in our shop, ready to be delivered and installed all across the reservation. It’s always inspiring to see so many people come together to make an impact

The community and our cultural presenters continue to share their perspectives and wisdom - informing our understanding and actions. Community dinners have been well attended throughout the summer. Our Program Manager, Abigail, has nearly perfected her pulled pork recipe and the people are showing out! Nothing brings people together like good food and good conversation. A shared meal and camaraderie. That’s the spirit that Re-Member is all about.

Our annual Healthcare Week wrapped up last Friday, and it was a big success. This program offers the opportunity for volunteers to dive deeper into care and education on and around the reservation. The group made stops at healthcare facilities and visited with medical professionals throughout the week. This year, we hosted an event with our Veggie Wagon focused on sustainable healthy eating habits, followed by a visit to Porcupine’s Elderly Meals Program where we learned about how they are utilizing produce to provide healthy meals and social opportunities for local elders.

This weekend, we participated in the annual Oglala Nation Powwow parade with a float constructed by Re-Member staff. During Oglala Nation, the community comes together for a powwow, rodeo and many other events. The festivities are attended by thousands from here on Pine Ridge and around the region. It’s an incredible celebration of culture and community that we are honored to attend each year.

RE-MEMBER ON THE ROAD: COMING SOON TO ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN

We are hitting the road this month to visit folks in the greater Chicago area, as well as various stops around Wisconsin. Join myself and former director, Cory True, to visit and learn more about current happenings on the reservation. Enjoy the company of fellow Re-Member volunteers over lite bites and sips.

We invite you to join us for one (or more) of the following FREE events:

SUPPORT LOCAL ARTISTS: SHOP THE RE-MEMBER ONLINE STORE

The Re-Member online store has been updated with many new items from artists around the reservation. There are so many incredibly talented creators here on Pine Ridge.

Many on Pine Ridge utilize the sale of art and other items to support themselves year-round. Sales of items in the summer might go towards an electric bill or propane payment in the winter. Our aim is to assist local artists in displaying their artwork and talents to a wider audience, assisting them in supporting themselves. Visit the store to see what we have available.

AMAZON WISHLISTS: SUPPORT RE-MEMBER WITH PROGRAM & GARDEN STAPLES

Our two wishlists provide an easy way to support our program, and the community.

Donations of program staples allow us to redirect funds to where they are needed most. From toilet paper to truck tires and chainsaws, we’ve received all sorts of much needed stuff from generous folks just like you.

Earlier this summer, we created a new garden wishlist. Check out this uniquely curated list to support our ongoing work in the Re-Member gardens to offer healthy local food options to the Oglala Lakota people here on Pine Ridge.

Thank you so much for keeping up with our story and supporting our work!

Gratefully,

Will Paese
